The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, where a student, Precious Goddy, allegedly assaulted Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, over a TikTok recording.

In a statement issued in Ibadan, Oyo State, NANS Senate President Babatunde Akinteye emphasized the association’s commitment to advocating for students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment.

He stated that while students have the right to self-expression, including using social media, such rights must be exercised responsibly and with respect for others.

Akinteye described the student’s actions as an embarrassment to the student body and contrary to the values of the Nigerian student community.

NANS called on the UNIZIK management to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into the incident, ensuring due diligence and fair hearing for all parties involved.

The association stressed that if the student is found guilty, appropriate sanctions should be applied in line with the institution’s regulations to serve as a deterrent to others.

Akinteye also urged students nationwide to channel their grievances through appropriate channels and avoid any form of misconduct that could undermine their future.

The management of UNIZIK has intervened in the matter, pledging to ensure justice.

The university assured the public of updates as its investigation progresses.

An eyewitness account revealed that the incident occurred when Dr. Okoye saw the student recording a TikTok video in the faculty corridor.

Suspecting he might appear in the video, the lecturer reportedly asked that it be deleted.

However, the student resisted, leading to a disagreement during which she allegedly bit him on both arms.

In a video shared by UNIZIK 94.1FM, Dr. Okoye recounted his experience, stating that he was leaving a classroom to his office when he saw the student making a TikTok video along the corridor.

He said he tapped her gently and asked her to excuse him as he passed, but the student said something insulting, which made him turn back and demand for her to delete the video she shot which must have captured him.

NANS reiterated its stance for responsible student leadership and discipline, stating that it would not hesitate to call out any action that contradicts these principles.

The association emphasized that acts of violence and misconduct have no place in academic institutions and that the academic environment must be preserved as a space of respect, learning, and professional engagement.
