A serving police officer, DSP Owolabi Akinlolu, has been ordered to cool his heels at the Maximum Correctional Centre Kirikiri for allegedly r@ping a 17-year-old girl in his office.
An Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos State gave the order on Tuesday, February 11.
According to the Punch, Owolabi, who was attached to the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, allegedly lured the minor into his office under the guise of helping her recover her phone stolen by one-chance robbers while returning from Ikeja with her grandmother and siblings.
The accused police officer allegedly gave the victim a call on June 29, two weeks after her phone was stolen, claiming they had apprehended the suspect who stole her phone, and asking her to come over to the station.
The unsuspecting teenager rushed to the police station where the senior police officer invited her into his office and allegedly locked his office door behind him.
He then allegedly stripped the frightened teenager and had carnal knowledge of her.
The victim told her family what happened to her and a formal complaint was filed leadin to the arrest of Akinlolu, 56.
It would be recalled that the teenager’s girl’s mother, Mrs Aramide Olupona, in July 2024, accused the police of attempting to bury the case.
She disclosed that the suspect’s wife and family were pressuring her to drop the case, as Akinlolu was about to retire in December 2024.
When the case came up in court on Tuesday, the prosecution counsel, backed by a seven-paragraph affidavit, urged the court to remand the defendant, stating that the offence of defilement violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate O.O. Fagboun acceded to the request and ordered the defendant’s remand at the Maximum Correctional Centre.
He adjourned the case until March 11, 2025, for trial and further proceedings.
