MTN trends after raising data prices, 15GB data jumps from N2k to N6k

MTN's new tariff

MTN Nigeria is currently trending on X in the country after increasing the cost of one of its data plans from N2K to N6K.

Checks online reveal that MTN’s 15Gb weekly plan now goes for N6,000. An old screenshot of the operator’s data bundle prices shows it was N2,260.

Netizens insisted the hike was too much at once.

Other data plans have also been adjusted upwards in various proportions. For instance, the 5GB plan that was N1,500 is redesignated at 5.5GB and will now cost N3,500, more than double its old price.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently announced the approval of a 50 per cent hike in tariffs for telecommunications operators who had been agitating for a 100 per cent increase.

The industry regulator said the hike was necessary to maintain sustainability in the very pivotal sector. NCC, however, said it decided to peg it at 50 percent to balance the interests of the operators with that of the consumers.

However, the adjustments made by MTN on its data plans are far above the approved limit, making some telecom users to wonder if there was a glitch in the operator’s system.

Enquiries from official quarters are yet to be responded to.

Some netizens have, however, been responding online.

See some reactions:

@shar454 “Jesus na glitch be this from MTN abi wetin😳. From 2k to 6k wtf @MTNNG”

@gbolahan2211 said: “Imagine MTN @MTNNG: “increasing their tariff 15gb overnight without prior notice to customers. This is no way to do things man. I even sent them a message and they told me cause they wanna serve me better. Damn!!”

@GIFTy6286 remarked: “If they like they should increase it to 1m,we will survive”

@AfrokonnectNG wrote: “This sudden price increase from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 for 15GB is wild! How are people supposed to cope with such an outrageous hike? Internet access is essential for work, education, and staying connected, yet it’s being priced like a luxury.

At this rate, users may be forced to look for alternatives or reduce their data consumption drastically. MTN really needs to reconsider this move because it’s not sustainable for the average Nigerian. What do you think about this development?”

@Gorilla23mp asked: “But this is almost 200% increment, I thought they said it won’t be up to 100%?”

@nolifefahard wrote: “Una Dey vote for capitalism na 😂😂😂

We will learn the hard way.”

@damilarebellz commented: “Una see say @AirtelNigeria and @GloWorld are two oloriburuku and backward set of network providers….mtn will continue to do as they please with their tariffs and prices because they know these other two useless network provider can’t match them.”
