The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State after failing to meet his bail conditions.

The spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed this development, stating that the monarch remains in custody until his bail is perfected.

Oba Ogunjobi was arraigned by the Ogun State Police Command following a viral video that surfaced, showing him assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola. The incident, which drew widespread condemnation, led to the monarch’s suspension and subsequent arraignment in court.

According to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025), Oba Ogunjobi faces allegations of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. The specific charges include:

“Conspiring to commit a misdemeanour, specifically assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, contrary to Section 517 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Unlawfully assaulting Abraham Areola by slapping him on the face and ear, an offence under Section 351 of the same code.

Conducting himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by forcing Areola to kneel and assaulting him in public, violating Section 249(d).”

The accused pleaded not guilty to all charges before Magistrate F. A. Iroko.

The court granted bail set at N5 million for each of the two required sureties, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

As of now, the monarch has not met these conditions and remains in custody.

The video of the assault has led to significant public outcry. In the footage, Oba Ogunjobi is seen verbally and physically assaulting Areola, forcing him to kneel on the road while accusing him of conspiracy against his family.

The monarch, a retired police officer, boasted of his connections within law enforcement and threatened to imprison Areola.

In response, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Ogun State commended the swift suspension of the monarch and called for full prosecution.

Similarly, the state Police Community Relations Committee praised the authorities for their prompt action and urged the arrest of the individual who struck the victim during the incident.

The case has been adjourned to March 6 for further hearing.
