A yet-to-be-identified woman estimated to be about 70 years of age has been run over by a man reversing his vehicle at Jemi Alade Estate in the Isheri-Olofin area of Lagos State.
The late pedestrian was reportedly walking home from an occasion together with her friend.
They were said to be metres away from the woman’s residence when an elderly man who was reversing out of his compound hit the woman.
An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Olajide told the Punch that the woman died on the spot.
He said, “They are close friends and they’ve been living in the estate for a while. They were returning from an occasion when an elderly man was reversing from his compound on the street. His brake failed and that was how he knocked the woman down. People quickly rushed to the spot to see if they could revive her but she was discovered to have stopped breathing. It was a terrible situation that day as some people started locking up their shops.”
A resident who spoke to our correspondent said the vehicle’s speed also caused it to crash into a beauty saloon opposite the house it drove out of.
The resident said, “After the vehicle rammed into the woman, it went ahead to crash into a beauty salon, damaging part of its extension. It would have even been fatal if someone was sitting on the spot. People could not do anything when the incident happened. It was later that the police arrived at the spot and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary.”
A source in the Idimu Police Station, where the incident was reported, said an investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the accident.
“The man who drove the vehicle has been reporting at our station since the incident occurred,” the source disclosed.
