The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked land titles in Abuja’s Maitama District, affecting several prominent individuals and organizations.
This action targets 762 plots due to non-payment of statutory fees and failure to obtain Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O).
Some of the organisations and individuals affected included Muhammadu Buhari Trust Foundation, Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, along with his wife, Regina Akume; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen and sitting governor of Kadunal State, Uba Sani.
Others included Former Governors Rochas Okorocha (Imo State), Ben Ayade (Cross River), and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa); former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin; and former Senators Andy Uba and Smart Adeyemi.
Former president Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, however, clarified that the former president does not personally own the revoked land, noting that the plot was allocated to the foundation, not to Buhari himself.
The revocations are executed under Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978, which empowers the minister to withdraw rights of occupancy for non-compliance with payment obligations or breach of other allocation terms.
The FCT Administration has also issued warnings to 614 other individuals and companies, indicating that their Rights of Occupancy will be withdrawn if outstanding bills are not settled within two weeks.
Minister Wike has emphasized the importance of adhering to land allocation terms and fulfilling financial obligations to maintain property rights within the FCT. This move is part of a broader initiative to enforce compliance and ensure proper land administration in Abuja.
