I don’t want to recreate Nigeria in the UK- Conservative Party leader in UK, Kemi Badenoch
The leader of the United Kingdom (UK) Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch has said that she did not expect to recreate the cultures she was used to in Nigeria in her new country, the United Kingdom.
She said if she really liked Nigeria that much, she would have moved over there and not remain in the UK.
Badenoch said immigrants should not expect to bring their home cultures into the UK, but should be ready to absorb the cultures that made the UK a favourite destination for them and so many other immigrants.
Speaking in the latest episode of The Free Press, she said: “If you don’t defend your culture, it will disappear. When people come to your country, they should want to be a part of that country. We are not a hotel or a dormitory for people who just want to make money and leave. This is our home and we need to look after it. That means ensuring that people who come to the country are compatible with those beliefs
I believe this involves two things: first, encouraging more migration from places that share similar values and second, ensuring that those who do come to the country understand the terms they accepted when moving to the UK. It’s not about bringing the culture of the other place and turning it into the place that you just come from. If I wanted to live in Nigeria, I would have moved back to Nigeria. I don’t want to recreate Nigeria in the UK.
I think there are many people who come from countries where they want to recreate what they are familiar with in the UK, that’s bad for social cohesion and it’s bad for the very things that made Britain what is it.
All of those things that I call labour values — freedom of speech, equality, being treated the same no matter who you are, whether you are the poorest person or the richest person, the presumption of innocence, something that is thrown away with cancel culture.
I know what it’s like to live in a place that doesn’t have these things, so it’s very precious and I will d!e to protect those things. I don’t want the UK being turned into the sort of place that everyone is running from, somebody has to defend it.”
