Gospel singer, Sinach sued for N5bn over ‘Way Maker’ copyright issue
Popular gospel singer, Sinach, has been slammed with a N5 billion lawsuit by music producer Michael Oluwole, professionally known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement involving her 2016 global hit song, Way Maker.
In the suit numbered FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Maye claims to be the co-author and co-owner of the song and is seeking a court declaration to recognize his contributions.
He is also demanding N5 billion in general damages for what he describes as the cumulative infringement of his rights.
Sinach, however, denies the producer’s claims, asserting that she is the sole author of the song. She also emphasized her global recognition as a gospel artist long before the release of Way Maker.
The trial commenced at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, but has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025, to allow both parties to present further evidence.
