A routine Miami-bound flight turned perilous on Thursday, November 14, as severe air turbulence caused significant disruption, leaving passengers and crew shaken.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight, originating from Stockholm, encountered unexpected turbulence mid-air during its descent into Miami International Airport.

The nine-hour flight was almost at its destination when it was forced to make a U-turn and head all the way back following the alarming situation on Thursday.

The incident caused panic among passengers, with many recounting objects flying around the cabin and the plane undergoing violent shakes.

The packed aircraft returned to a base in Copenhagen to undergo checks over concerns about technical issues.

A passenger on the flight, who was travelling with his wife, posted footage showing screaming passengers as the plane was rattled by the turbulence.

A woman sitting in his row is then flung upwards. ‘Look at her feet touching the [ceiling]!’ he wrote. ‘I thought we were going to [die]’.

In-flight service was halted immediately, and the flight crew prioritized safety, urging passengers to remain seated with seatbelts fastened.

Medical teams awaited the flight’s arrival to assist any injured passengers. Minor injuries such as bruises and cuts were reported, primarily due to unsecured items and the turbulence’s impact on unbuckled individuals.

Passengers commended the crew’s professionalism in handling the situation. One passenger stated, “The captain kept us informed throughout, which helped calm some nerves during what was an otherwise terrifying experience.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the severity of the turbulence and whether weather forecasts provided adequate warning. Experts note that turbulence of this magnitude, while rare, underscores the importance of always adhering to seatbelt protocols during flights.
