The Kwara State Police Command has detained several officers in connection with the alleged killing of Suleiman Olayinka, a 27-year-old student of Kwara State University (KWASU).
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday around 2:00 p.m. in Ilorin’s Tanke area.
Eyewitnesses claim that after Olayinka got off a motorcycle, three officers approached him and forcibly wrestled him to the ground.
One witness said Olayinka had just withdrawn N1,000 from a point-of-sale (PoS) operator to pay the Okada rider.
“As soon as he collected the money, the officers came out of a tricycle, dragged him down, and ignored his questions and pleas,” the witness recounted, adding that Olayinka informed the officers he was asthmatic, but they ignored him.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, confirmed that authorities were aware of the incident.
“This tragic incident led to the sudden death of Suleiman Olayinka, aged 27. A complaint of cheating and criminal breach of trust had been reported against the deceased, prompting police detectives to investigate,” she stated.
The officers involved have been arrested and are under investigation.
The incident follows a similar case just weeks ago, where three officers were dismissed and charged over the killing of a Kwara Polytechnic student, Quoyum Abdulyekeen.
