The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered all officers of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black armbands for seven days as a mark of respect for the late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff,
This directive was announced on Thursday in a statement by police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi.
According to the statement, the mourning band signifies a tribute to the late General, who was celebrated for his bravery, commitment, and tireless efforts in combating crime and insurgency across Nigeria.
“He was a remarkable leader deserving of this honour,” the statement read.
Lagbaja passed away in Lagos after an illness, though details of the illness remain undisclosed.
President Bola Tinubu has also extended condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, lauding his service to the nation.
The Nigerian Police Force will observe this period of mourning in solidarity with the military and in recognition of the General’s impact on national security.
Meanwhile, trips showing the late COAS mobilising his troops and doing press-ups with them have flooded the internet as people pay tribute to the fallen soldier.
In one clip, he was shown mobilising his men to dismantle a roadblock rather than sit in the car while soldiers did the work.
