The Ogun State Government has issued a directive for residents of flood-prone areas to relocate without delay, as heavy flooding continues to impact various communities across the state.
Areas affected by the recent release of water from the Oyan Dam include Isheri, Riverview Estate, Oshorun Estate, OPIC Estate, Arepo, Mawere, Akute, Alagbole, Orimerunmu, and Magboro.
The government reiterated its earlier advisory, urging residents in these locations to either relocate or elevate their homes during the current flood season.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, emphasized that the ongoing flooding is a result of the lowland nature of the areas and the increased tidal fluctuations caused by river flooding.
He added that the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority had to release excess water from the Oyan Dam to prevent severe damage.
Oresanya explained that while the release of water was necessary, the floodwaters are expected to begin receding significantly by Friday, 25 October. He noted that this process would be facilitated by previously dredged waterways and canals created by the current administration, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The commissioner assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government, is working on long-term solutions to the region’s persistent flooding issues.
