The Super Eagles of Nigeria remain stranded at Al Abraq Airport in Libya, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed.
The team was held up upon their arrival for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Libya, scheduled to take place soon.
According to reports, the players and officials have been stranded for several hours, without access to necessary services, in what appears to be a diplomatic delay.
The Libyan authorities have not provided clear reasons for the detention, leaving the team in a frustrating situation.
Efforts to resolve the issue are ongoing, but the NFF is expressing concern over the impact on the team’s preparations for the upcoming match.
Defender William Troost-Ekong has been vocal about the situation, describing the conditions as “disgraceful” and calling out the Libyan officials for their handling of the matter.
There are growing fears that if the situation is not resolved soon, it could affect Nigeria’s performance in the qualifier.
The NFF is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the quick release of the team.
It would be recalled that the Nigeria’s national football team and their officials were held hostage at Al Abraq Airport in Libya on Sunday, October 13, 2024 upon their arrival.
The ordeal began without any explanation after the team arrived for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Libya.
The players were stranded in the arrival hall of the airport with no reason stated for their detention.
