Mayor beheaded just 6 days after taking office in Mexico
Alejandro Arcos, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo in Guerrero, Mexico, has been assassinated just six days after assuming office.
On October 6, 2024, his severed head was discovered atop his pickup truck, with his body inside, marking a brutal end to his brief tenure.
This shocking event follows the murder of another city official, Francisco Tapia, the new city government’s secretary, who was killed three days prior.
The state of Guerrero has been plagued by violence, particularly against public officials and journalists.
Notably, at least six candidates were killed in the state leading up to the June 2 elections.
Governor Evelyn Salgado of Guerrero expressed profound sorrow and indignation over the loss, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
Similarly, Alejandro Moreno, leader of Arcos’ PRI party, condemned the murders and called for federal intervention, highlighting concerns about governance in Guerrero.
Chilpancingo, like much of Guerrero, has been grappling with escalating violence, often linked to drug cartels and organized crime.
The region remains one of the most dangerous in Mexico, with high rates of homicide and frequent attacks on public figures.
