Lagos Assembly suspends Alimosho LG Chairman

The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended Jelili Sulaimon, Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, over allegations of misconduct and non-compliance.

The decision, which took effect immediately, was made during a plenary session on Monday, October 7, 2024.

The lawmakers unanimously agreed that Vice Chairman Akinpelu Johnson should take over the council’s administration during Sulaimon’s suspension.

The council’s management, including its manager and treasurer, were instructed to cooperate fully with Johnson.

The motion for suspension was presented by Sanni Okanlawon, Chairperson of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Citing sections of the 1999 Constitution, Okanlawon accused Sulaimon of defiance and repeatedly disregarding legislative directives.

He also referenced the unrest in Iyana-Ipaja in April 2024, where a man named Michael Ajayi died, alleging that Sulaimon played a role in instigating the chaos.

Majority Leader Noheem Adams emphasized that Sulaimon’s suspension should serve as a cautionary message for other local government leaders, noting the chairman’s failure to follow procurement guidelines and proper budgetary processes.

Lawmakers, including Ladi Ajomale and Nureni Akinsanya, further highlighted financial irregularities uncovered by the State Auditor-General.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa ordered the Assembly clerk to officially communicate the resolution to all concerned authorities.
