Legendary actor, John Amos, best known for his roles in ‘Good Times’, ‘Roots and Coming to America’, has passed away at the age of 84.
His son, K.C. Amos, confirmed that the actor died of natural causes on August 21 in Los Angeles.
K.C. wrote, “It is with great sadness that I announce my father’s passing. He had the kindest heart and a heart of gold. He was loved by many, with countless fans considering him their TV father. He lived a fulfilling life, and his legacy will endure through his remarkable contributions to television and film.”
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1939, Amos initially pursued a career in football, playing at Colorado State University before a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. His acting career took off in 1970 with appearances on The Cosby Show and The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. He gained fame as Gordy the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Amos starred as James Evans Sr. in Good Times, one of the first shows to portray a Black two-parent family on television. His role as Kunta Kinte in Roots earned him an Emmy nomination and was a defining moment in his career.
Amos is survived by his children, K.C. Amos and Shannon Amos.
