Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has been confirmed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by the Senate.

The confirmation took place on Wednesday, September 25, following a screening session before the Senate.

Kekere-Ekun, who is the most senior justice of the Supreme Court, becomes the second woman to hold the position in the country’s history.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, presided over the session where the lawmakers unanimously approved her nomination.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier forwarded her nomination to the Senate for confirmation, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the former CJN.

Kekere-Ekun, who has had a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades, is widely recognized for her judicial expertise and integrity. During her screening, she outlined her vision for Nigeria’s judiciary, focusing on reforms aimed at improving access to justice and enhancing the independence of the judiciary.

With her confirmation, Kekere-Ekun is expected to lead the judiciary in addressing key issues such as judicial delays, corruption, and public trust in the legal system.

Her appointment has been met with praise, particularly for breaking new ground as a female leader in the male-dominated judiciary.
