The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has identified the woman who tore a Nigerian passport belonging to her husband at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos in a video that has now gone viral.
NIS in a statement identified the woman as Mrs. Igiebor, and said a probe had been instituted into the incident.
The NIS in the statement released on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo said there were specified penalties for the act carried out by the woman.
It would be recalled that Mrs. Igiebor and her family recently arrived in Nigeria via the MMIA.
After airport clearance upon their arrival in Nigeria on Saturday, August 10, 2024, she got hold of her husband’s passport and tore it into shreds.
The reason for this action is not known, but fellow travellers said the woman had been fighting her husband on the flight before they landed.
When someone confronted her about her action, she retorted: “Na your passport?” (Is it your passport?)
The NIS is now saying her action could be a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), which prohibits the wilful destruction of Nigerian travel documents.s for such offenses.
The NIS said appropriate sanctions were outlined in the act and would be applied accordingly if the woman was found guilty.
