A man has drawn attention to the severe side effects of hair colouration after his head became bigger overnight following the beauty therapy.
Twenty-Seven-year-old Ryan Briggs of Lancashire, United Kingdom, said the “horrible” incident occurred in July at his mother’s house after he applied the dye she gave him to cover up his grey hairs.
Briggs said after he applied the dye, it burnt a little, but he thought that it was probably normal.
The gas technician told Kennedy News Agency that it turned out that it was not meant to generate the heat he felt.
He said he woke up the next day with a tiny rash. He said he initially did not pay attention to it until his head started expanding.
He was at work when he noticed the severe reaction and ‘It just escalated from there. I looked like Megamind” he said.
A picture he posted shows a bloated band encircling his forehead. He joked that he did not look like himself ‘at all’.
His girlfriend told him he resembled a “balloon head.”
His colleagues urged him to go to the hospital and he heeded their advice.
The doctors told him to return home and come back if his condition worsened.
Briggs said he also thought by the time he slept he would be back to normal by the following day. Unfortunately, that was not the case as he woke up with a more severe condition.
He could not see well as his eyes had also swollen up, leading him to call for an ambulance.
Upon scrutiny, the doctors found that Briggs’ condition was triggered by paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a known irritant and allergen commonly found in hair dyes.
Medics spent the better part of 13 hours preventing the swelling from reaching his neck and airways.
He was later released and told to purchase an unspecified prescription medication for him. This was bought by his girlfriend, as he still could not see out of one eye due to the extreme swelling.
His head is now back to normal, his scalp has ‘yellow and green scabs’, according to him.
Briggs expressed gratitude that his throat did not close up during the ordeal.
He advised people to take a patch test so they do not die after dyeing their hair.
