A Nigerian man, Opeyemi Akande, has generated some controversy on social media after he criticised the citizens of Ogun State for their love for merriment at the expense of infrastructural development.

Akande, a screenwriter, was commenting on the beautiful pictures and videos coming out of the just concluded Ojude Oba festival held in Ogun State on Tuesday, June 18.

Social media and traditional media platforms have been awash with photos from the festival as many Nigerians took delight in the rich cultural heritage displayed at the festival.

Ojude Oba is an ancient festival celebrated by the Yoruba people of Ijebu-Ode, a major town in Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria.

The festival usually takes place on the third day after Eid al-Kabir, to pay homage and show respect to the Royal Majesty, the Awujale of Ijebuland.

Reacting to the buzz generated from this year’s festival. Opeyemi wrote:

“Ojude Oba is the only thing they know in that Ogun State. Light dem no get. Road? Nothing. Just Adire and Aso Oke”

Many people, especially indigenes of Ogun State, disagreed with him, while many others endorsed his sentiments.
