Reports from the Customs rice distribution points in Nigeria indicate chaos and anarchy as Nigerians tried to outdo one another to get hold of the rice.
Pictures and videos posted online showed people pushing and shoving each other while some can be seen climbing on top of others to get hold of the rice.
It was initially being distributed at the rate of N10,000 per bag, but eye-witnesses said the officials at a point declared it free, perhaps when they were not able to control the surging crowd.
It became a free-for-all situation.
A video shows Nigerians besieging some containers containing the bags of rice.
Some youths can be seen climbing on top of others to get into the containers to get a bag of the commodity.
The narrator of the video claimed that seven people lost their lives but this cannot be independently confirmed.
