A political associate of Senator Kabir Marafa, Magaji Lawal, has reportedly lost his life in the hands of members of the recently inaugurated Community Protection Guards in Zamfara State.
Lawal was reportedly invited to the CPG office in Tsafe Town on Saturday to be interrogated on suspicion of collusion with bandits.
Senator Marafa reportedly encouraged Lawal to honour the invitation, but was shocked to later learn that he had passed away during the interrogation.
He claimed Lawal was tortured and injuries were inflicted upon him.
He expressed support for the state government’s efforts to combat banditry but raised concerns about the alleged recruitment of individuals with questionable character into the CPG.
The state government has ordered security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada, stated that the altercation stemmed from a dispute between two factions of local vigilante groups but assured that the situation is now under control.
Nakwada stated that the government has pledged to sanction anyone found culpable in the incident according to the law.
