ASUU rejects FG’s student loan scheme over negative effects it’ll have on students

ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bauchi Zone has rejected the students’ loan scheme of the federal government, citing the psychological effect it could have on the students.

They canvassed non-refundable grants instead of loans.

The ASUU Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, Lazarus Maig-oro, showed the union’s stance while speaking at a scholarship-for-indigent-student programme held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi on Saturday.

He said, “The question is: who will pay the loan? What is the fate of those who cannot access it? The psychological tr@uma the students will be subjected to due to the loan while still in studies will affect their performance negatively

The fact that they will graduate with a loan of N4 million & above without the capacity to pay back will be another psychological tort¥re for students

ASUU said millions of students would not be able to access the loans because of the stringent conditions attached to them and might ultimately drop out of school.
