The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu rest the controversies surrounding his identity by reintroducing himself.

Obi said the certificate saga of President Bola Tinubu had further worsened the country’s ‘less than glorious image’ in the world.

While addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi stated that the certificate issue had affected the average Nigerian within and outside the country.

He said: “To the outsiders, the entire Chicago University matter, as well as Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s many other lingering identity, question marks have further worsened Nigeria’s less than glorious image internationally.

“Uninformed outsiders now see every Nigerian as a fraudster, certificate forger, and identity thief. The controversy is unnecessary, and the implicit global embarrassment could have been avoided.”

It would be recalled that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, had obtained Tinubu’s records from the CSU through a court process.

The released records, which came first on October 3, showed that Tinubu’s 1979 CSU certificate which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was different from samples of the certificates the university issued to students that same year.

Atiku, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, addressed a world press conference on the certificate saga.

In his press conference, Obi said Tinubu need to urgently rest all the controversies.

He said:

“I respectfully call on Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reintroduce himself to the nation he governs and to the world for avoidance of further doubt. He should let the world know his name, nationality, place of birth, parentage, primary and secondary schools attended with dates, universities attended and certificates obtained, he should indicate clearly where and when he did his NYSC. In addition, if at any time he had a change of name, he should state so clearly. This is a simple task that takes only a few minutes and requires no affidavits, prolonged court process, spokespersons, agents or surrogates. This is a task he alone can perform through a direct statement. He must perform this task urgently in order to lay to rest any lingering doubts around his true identity.”
