Three persons, including a student of the Department of Guidance and Counselling, Lagos State University, Ademola Ayinla, lost their lives in a multiple roach crash that occurred on the Sagamu-Benin Highway in Ogun State on Tuesday.

Ayinla was said to have been rescued from the crash and rushed to a nearby hospital in Ilishan Remo where the doctor on duty later confirmed him dead.

The crash was said to have involved a Lexus car, a truck, and Toyota Sienna.

The state police command, in a statement on Wednesday, identified the vehicles involved in the crash as a Geon Truck with number plate LAR 730 XB driven by one Rasak Olayinka, an unregistered Toyota Sienna driven by one Kelechi Nwagu, and a Lexus car with number plate BDG 979 HD driven by one Sorunke Emmanuel.

The command said the accident occurred when the driver of the Lexus car drove recklessly and rammed into the moving truck, causing the Lexus to somersault and the Sienna to hit the Lexus, trapping it and its occupants.

The statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, indicated that Olayinka, Nwagu and Ayinla were pronounced dead by the doctor while the driver of the Lexus, who allegedly caused the mishap, was receiving treatment at the teaching hospital.

Odutola condemned a surge in speeding and reckless driving in the state and warned drivers to be more cautious.

She said, “Since June 2023, there has been a surge in the number of accident cases daily across the state, not excluding motorcycle crashes; this is one of them, and the impacts recorded are regrettably fatal.

“The major causes of these needless accidents are human error; only a few accidents happen on account of mechanical faults.

“Speeding on wet tarmac, influenced driving and phone engagement are some of the known human errors that constitute the large numbers.”
