Blasphemy recognized by Nigerian law – Force PRO calls for enlightenment
Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi has charged Muslim clerics to educate their followers on the issues of blasphemy against prophets.
In a series of tweets, Adejobi decried the killing of a Sokoto State resident, Usman Buda Mai, who was accused of degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad.
Usman was beaten to death on Sunday over the alleged blasphemy, causing tension in parts of the state.
The Force spokesman pointed out that blasphemy is an offence in the nation’s constitution and should not be enforced by members of the public.
He wrote, “Sokoto command has been on it. Let’s wait for their report and action. But I think we need to call on our clerics to carry out enlightenment on this issue.
“Blasphemy, though an offence recognized by Nigerian law, is not subject to the whims of members of the public for enforcement”.
