UNILAG declares lecture-free weeks for elections

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has announced lecture-free weeks to enable the students of the institution to vote during the presidential and governorship elections.

The announcement was contained in a statement entitled “Fourth Revised Academic Calendar for the second semester, 2021/2022 session, as sighted by MySchoonews.

In the revised academic calendar, UNILAG declared a lecture-free week from Thursday, February 23 to 27 to enable students to vote during the presidential election on Saturday, February 25.

The University Senate also declared Thursday, March 9 to 13. a lecture-free week to allow the students to vote during the gubernatorial election on Saturday, March 11.

With the declaration of lecture-free weeks in February and March, UNILAG students will be able to exercise their franchise during the presidential and national assembly as well as governorship and state house of assembly elections.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), students make up 40 per cent of newly registered voters for the 2023 general elections.

The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had said 7.2 million new voters are youths and are between 18 and 34 years while 3.8 million (40.8 per cent) were students.
