A young man has been apprehended after he stole the sum of N838,000 from the bank account of a Point of Sale (POS) operator by simply requesting her to put on her hotspot.
The suspect, Adejoh David, specialized in this new style of defrauding people by hacking their hotspots to gain access to their financial applications.
He would tell a POS operator he wanted to make a cash deposit of N3000. He would then claim that he was out of data and request the operator to put on their hotspot.
The moment that is given to him, he would hack into it and wipe out the money in the operator’s account.
Nemesis caught up with him when he played this same trick on a POS operator. He requested that she put on her hotspot and she complied.
After the transaction and the Yahoo boy had left, the lady got an OTP code on her phone with an option to accept of decline. Out of panic, she mistakenly accepted it, and the sum of N838,000 was taken out of her account.
She reported to the police who were able to trace the money to an account of a betting company.
They were able to isolate the user through the phone number used to register with the betting company.
The suspect was traced to Eko Hotel and Suites, where he was said to be living large with some ladies of easy virtue.
He is currently being held by the police.
