Violence erupts at Alaba Rago as traders engage police, one dead

One person was shot dead on Tuesday as traders at Alaba Rago Market clashed with policemen from the Okokomaiko Division.

It was gathered that the police had gone to effect the arrest of a suspect at the market and came under massive attack from large number of traders.

The police were said to have shot one of the traders dead in a tactical move to retreat from the mob of attackers.

Spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the killing of one of the traders as the police were trying to beat a retreat.

According to him, “policemen of Okokomaiko Division today went into Alaba Rago Market to effect arrest of a suspect but came under heavy attack from a large number of traders.

“In a bid to tactically retreat from the armed mob attack, one of the officers fired his weapon, resulting in fatal injury to one of the attackers.

“A detailed investigation has commenced into the immediate and remote causes of the incident,” he said.

A Twitter user, Ade Osinaike said “I blame the Lagos State government. The Alaba Rago people had been given ultimatum to vacate the place but Kwankwanso came to intervene on their behalf some months again and here we are. Must everything be politic? To me if you attack an officer of the law on lawful duty, bullet.”

Gidado Leee added: “Hope people know how notorious Alaba Rago market is? We are talking of a community that is full of criminals. I pray we don’t experience their nefarious activities.”
