Sperm for cash: Ghanaian youths embrace sperm donation to tackle poverty

Ghanaian youths are rushing over themselves to donate their sperm at a string of fertility hospitals across the country.

The rush was sparked by a young man who disclosed in a special feature by Ghana TV3 that he donates sperm for a fee of GH¢2,500 every week.

The clip of the revelation went viral immediately, sparking a rush from other young men who have been battling economic hardship in the West African country.

The feature by Emmanuel Samani dubbed “Man Assisted Babies” was aired on the primetime news programme News360 Saturday, January 14, 2023.

The film was aimed at exploring semen and egg donations in Ghana which has become the means of survival for many unemployed youths who have to make ends meet.

To this end, a Ghanaian health educator and researcher identified as Dr Paul Adu has taken to Twitter to share a list of fertility hospitals to save many the headache.

In follow-up tweets, Dr Adu expressed alarm at the rate young men from across Ghana had bombarded his DM with enquiries.

He bemoaned how Ghana’s economic hardship and rising rate of unemployment has reached an alarming level “where the youth have to donate their semen to put food on their tables.”

Dr. Paul Adu tweeted:

“I’ve gotten about 600 Dms from men who seriously want to donate their sperms for money.

This country is so finished to the point where the youth have to donate their semen to put (food) on their tables.

Isn’t it sad?

Something must be done fast!”
