Canada-based student axed by university following Nigerian bank’s failure to remit fees

A Nigerian post-graduate student has reportedly got his admission revoked following the failure of his bank, GT Bank, to process his final semester’s payment for months.

A Twitter user, Victor Babatunde, escalated this on the app, lamenting that the incident, which he called the saddest thing this year, happened to his friend.

Read his account:

“This is really the saddest thing I’ve heard this year 💔

So my friend’s admission has been withdrawn and cancelled after spending tens of millions of naira on his Postgraduate Studies in Canada because @gtbank and @cenbank didn’t process his last tuition after months. He knew he had to start the payments process earlier than his other international classmates so he started the tuition payment process for his final semester in school about 2 months ago with GT Bank. Last month (November 28, 2022), GTBank deducted the tuition fee and other accompanying charges from my account (Screenshots attached). But up till this very moment, Guaranty Trust Bank has refused to process the payment and get it across to his school, which made the school withdraw and cancel his admission yesterday.

Others with similar situations have come under the thread to express their frustrations with Nigerian banks.

Chichi Ukoha (@Dr_Jhenny) wrote: “This is my current situation except that my school had been very lenient with me. Mine was since 7th of October. My experience with @gtbank_help @gtbank  is literally the worst experience in my history of banking with Nigerian banks, sadly. I didn’t mention that they debited me as well. A whole $31, 078 was debited but wasn’t paid by @gtbank and I kept getting mails about being suspended from school.

Some other Twitter users accuse Zenith Bank of being in the same boat.
