Popular singer Teniola Apata better known as Teni, has been criticized by some Nigerians for disrespecting President Mohammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, October 11, when she was conferred with national honour.
A video clip of the event shows the moment the singer is called to collect her award. At the mention of her name, she swaggers to where the president is standing, collects the award and swaggers back to her seat with no acknowledgement of the president like the other award recipients did.
Teni later posed with her Member of the Order of Niger (MON) award in front of the award backdrop outside the venue.
Some Nigerians on Twitter accused the singer of being rude. Some others defended her, arguing it was a silent protest against the administration’s poor handling of the youths of the nation.
However, many pointed out that she could have rejected the award as a protest, but that once she opted to accept the award, she was bound to show some respect to the president who handed it over to her.
