Seven aides, security details dead

The convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah came under heavy attack from unknown gunmen at Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday, September 11, leaving seven of his aides and security details dead.

The assailants ambushed the convoy and opened fire on it on Sunday evening. The police operatives in the convoy responded to the attack but sadly seven of them fell to the gunmen’s bullets.

The senator, who marked his 51st birthday on 3 September, was riding in a bulletproof car and managed to escape. His car was riddled with bullets nevertheless.

The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed that there was an attack on men of the command at Enugwu-Ukwu, but insisted that the casualty figure remained unknown.

”The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command CP Echeng Echeng has today 11/9/2022 led Operatives to the scene where shootings took place in Enugwu.

Though the details of the incident are still sketchy, operatives are on ground there as operations (are) going on and the situation is being monitored.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of the state has condemned in strong terms, the attack on Ubah’s convoy, according to his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.

The governor said his administration was fully determined to wipe out every act of criminality in the state.

He described the attack as the “last ditched-effort of a sinking boat” by criminal elements in the state.

He reassured the people that all security agencies were on full alert to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous attack, who would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Soludo commiserated with the senator and the families of his aides killed as well as the state commissioner of police, for the policemen who also lost their lives.

Mr Kameh Ogbonna, media assistant to Ubah, in a statement said the senator was able to escape the terror because of the bulletproof vehicle he was riding in.

“If not for the bulletproof jeep the senator was riding in, he would have been dead by now.

“We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from all sides and as I speak with you Obum, the special aide to the senator is dead.

“About seven security operatives were hit by the assassins’ bullets,” he stated.
