The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has confirmed that his men faced stiff resistance from commercial motorcycle operators in Ojo area of the state but added that his men prevailed and arrested 35 of the operators trying to foment trouble.
The police boss also said a total of 195 motorcycles had been impounded in the ongoing enforcement of the state government ban on motorcycle operations in the state.
Alabi who briefed newsmen at the police command headquarters, Ikeja on Friday, said his team was prepared to tackle motorcyclists who might want to migrate to other areas of the state to continue their trade.
He noted that the ban was in phases, adding that strategic measures were being developed to subdue any challenge that could arise from the implementation of the ban.
He said the okada riders became violent when his team carried the enforcement drive to the Lagos Badagry Expressway on Thursday.
“We had to mobilise our tactical and operational commanders to reinforce our policemen on the ground and they (motorcyclists) were subdued. In the course of doing that, we arrested 35 suspects and impounded 195 motorcycles. Normalcy was restored immediately.
“All of us are aware of the backlash that could happen because of this ban but we are prepared for it.”
