The voice note containing the alleged blasphemy that led to the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto has been uploaded online.
The late student had done the voice note in reaction to a religious message sent to her class’ Whatsapp group. The message was one of such that ask that those who receive them should forward them lest they faced some unpleasant consequences.
Deborah refuted the subtle curse with ‘Holy Ghost Fire! and affirmed that nothing bad would happen to her. She asked the sender to stop putting such messages on the platform meant for classwork.
Those who understand what she said in the voice note in Hausa translated it here:
“Holy Ghost Fire! Nothing’s going to happen to me. You should know what to be sending to this group. It is not that the group was created to be sending nonsense. The group was created for posting things like test, assignments e.t.c. not the nonsense you are posting. No be only prophet, you are coming to play on me.” The Twitter user who did the translation added: “The nonsense she referred to is the religious posts.”
Her comments were said to have irked some of her colleagues who felt she disrespected Prophet Mohammed, and tried to lynch her initially, but was rescued by the school’s security team. When they sensed the mob would not back down, they invited the police and put the lady in a holding cell in the security team’s office for her protection.
However, the enraged students overpowered the security officers and the police that arrived as they pelted them with stones and other missiles. They dragged Deborah out, and beat her until she died before setting her corpse on fire.
