Suspected kidnapper nearly lynched in Abeokuta after being recognised by ‘victim’ (Video)

The suspect

A man walking about in Abeokuta ran into serious trouble on Monday after he was accused of being one of the Fulani kidnappers in the forest tormenting Ogun State residents.

The suspect was said to be going about his business when a man confronted him and accused him of being a part of a syndicate that once kidnapped him and collected ransom before releasing him.

Passersby and residents pounced on the suspect at Idi-Ori area of Abeokuta North LGA of Ogun State. They beat him to a stupor.

“They tied his hands and legs. They beat him and gave him a bloody nose. He would have been lynched if not for the arrival of the police,” a witness told DailyTrust.

“At first, the youths did not want to release him to the police. They said they didn’t trust the police. Their fear was that he might be released on bail. They insisted that they’re very sure he was a kidnapper.”

Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, but called on the people to refrain from jungle justice, as the suspect remained a suspect until convicted.
