A mother of two, Yetunde Folorunsho, who was allegedly poisoned by her husband in Ilorin, Kwara State might have killed herself going by a testimony by a chemist that the woman bought insecticide from them before her death.
The husband’s family are also claiming that the woman took poison in protest after a disagreement with her husband over his plan to marry another wife.
Recall that Yetunde, a Linguistics graduate of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), died at the General Hospital, Ilorin, on Monday, April 11.
The Kwara State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mopelola Abdulmaliq-Bashir, revealed that a post-mortem examination to ascertain the real cause of her death will be conducted next week Tuesday by medical doctors in Ilorin.
The Commissioner, who disclosed this during a condolence visit to Yetunde’s husband’s family house, at Araoje area in Ilorin metropolis, said that no stone would be left unturned to unravel the cause of her death, as there are two versions to the story.
One Oyeronke Oluwakemi, who claims to be Yetunde’s course mate, alleged that the deceased was poisoned by her husband, Hassan and mother-in-law over a disagreement with her religious status.
It was gathered that Yetunde reportedly converted from Christianity to Islam so as to marry her husband, who is a Muslim.
However, Yetunde’s neighbours told Daily Trust that she drank the poison after a disagreement with her husband over his intention to marry a second wife since as a Muslim it was allowed.
Speaking on the issue, her husband’s brother, Alhaji Lagbe Araoje, said Yetunde allegedly consumed a deadly substance suspected to be “DD force” after a quarrel with Hassan.
“On Monday, around 10 am, she (Yetunde) had a little quarrel with her husband outside the house; it was settled and she went inside. The husband later gave her a phone that she had earlier requested.
“Some minutes later, the husband rushed out of the house crying for help that his wife was vomiting. On our way to the hospital, she was begging the husband for forgiveness that she had taken DDT powder popularly known as Sniper. She died in the hospital around 12pm.”
Also speaking, the husband of Hajia Nimahtallahi who operates the chemist where Yetunde allegedly bought the Sniper, Adio Tajudeen, confirmed the purchase of the substance from his wife.
“It was when the news of her death broke that we knew she was living in the neighbourhood. People buy the powder for many reasons; we don’t suspect it would be used for evil purposes.”
Meanwhile, the police spokesman in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, said, “A case of murder was reported by a brother to the late woman’s husband. But we are still investigating because there are insinuations of homicide. We have invited all the parties and deposited her corpse for autopsy.”
The police officer in charge of the case, Emmanuel Johnson, said they have retrieved the container of the substance late Yetunde was claimed to have allegedly taken.
He disclosed that doctors said “there are two tests to detect the fact of the case medically, ‘Post mortem’ and ‘Toxicology’.
“Toxicology is not done here in Ilorin, therefore, post mortem has been settled for and slated to be carried out on Tuesday, 19th April, 2022,” he added.
