Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is in Abuja for the APC convention has reacted to the killing of Area Boy Tommy in Abeokuta as the killing triggered panic in Oluwo and Panseke areas of the capital.
“My attention has been drawn to the unrest going on in some parts of Abeokuta. Information available to me says these dastardly acts are being perpetrated by some criminals tagged cultists”, Abiodun tweeted.
“To this extent, I have given the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command and other security agencies a marching order to go after those criminals responsible for this crisis and restore total peace.
“Parents and guardians are also advised to warn their children and wards, as there will be no room for any form of plea for anybody culpable for these despicable and condemnable acts”.
Ogun Police said they have arrested 18 suspects over the murder.
Tommy, a resident of Oluwo, in the state capital, was trailed by suspected cultists to Panseke where he was macheted to death on Thursday night.
His assailants waited till he breathed his last before leaving the scene.
The murder triggered panic in Oluwo and Panseke as residents fled and shops were locked up.
Reports indicated that Tommy may have been a victim of a new war between members of Aiye and Eiye cult groups.
Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the murder was connected to cultism.
“It was a cult clash and the cultists killed one of them last night around Panseke. 18 suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident”, Oyeyemi told Punch.
“The people need not be afraid. We have deployed policemen to the area. We are on top of the situation.”
