Update: Teacher arrested for using cane to design the back of 2-year-old pupil in Lagos

A teacher (name withheld) has been arrested for allegedly physically assaulting a 2-year and 3-months old baby at school.

Recall that the teacher was alleged to have assaulted the baby on Monday 7th of February 2020 at Unic Vilos Montessori school, Maza Maza, allegedly for inability to recite the alphabets.

The mother of the baby cried out and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LSDSVA) was informed of the alleged child abuse on the 11th of February, 2022.

An investigation conducted by the joint team comprising the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Department of School Social Work of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, revealed that the teacher failed to express remorse, but boastfully stated that she would continue to physically assault the child.

“During the interview, the teacher revealed that she had beaten the toddler because the child was distracting the class.

“As a result of the physical abuse, the toddler was referred to Amuwo Odofin General Hospital on Saturday 12th of February, 2022 and the case was reported at the Family Support Unit of FESTAC Police Station on Monday, 14th of February, 2022”, LSDSVA said in a statement.

According to the agency, the offending teacher was arraigned before Ajegunle Magistrate Court, Sikiru Adagun Court House on the 15th of February, 2022.

“In view of this, the DSVA has reiterated the State Government’s zero-tolerance to all forms of Child Abuse whilst reassuring all Lagos State residents of the commitment of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration in upholding the tenets of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Executive Order,” DSVA said.
