Update: Three dead, two rescued from collapsed Yaba building

No fewer than three persons have been recovered dead from the ruins of the building which collapsed in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Saturday.

Aside from the three fatalities recorded, emergency responders were able to rescue two victims who were trapped under the rubbles for more than seven hours.

Recall that a three-storey building on Akanbi Crescent, close to the University of Lagos, which was still under construction had collapsed around 3:30 pm on Saturday.

An hour after the collapse, first responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and other sister agencies arrived at the scene to begin rescue operations.

So far, it is still unclear the number of people trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building.

Confirming the development, the Director-General, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said all the bodies recovered were adult males, and that efforts are being intensified to save more lives.

His confirmation was contained in a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, titled, ‘Situation Report on Collapsed Building on Akanbi Street Close to Unilag Main Gate’.

According to him, the emergency responders recovered the bodies and rescued others still alive following the swift deployment of the agency’s heavy-duty equipment.

“Total count as of 23:00hrs. Rescued alive: 2 adult males. Recovered dead: 3 adult males.”

He added that the recovery operation was still ongoing for other victims.
