Students protest incessant trailer accidents in Akungba, Ondo, following crushing of an ex-student
‘Save Akungba’ is among the top five trending topics on Friday as the students of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, protest the incessant trailer accidents that lead to loss of lives in the hilly town.
Microsecondnews learnt that the protest followed the killing of a 2017 graduate of the school who had cause to visit the institution but lost his life in a trailer accident on Thursday evening.
The student identified as Michael Akinniy was killed by a trailer coming from Ikare-Akoko.
The driver of the trailer that killed the undergraduate reportedly attempted to run away but was arrested and handed over to the police.
The students instantly came out en masse to register their displeasure with the trend. They gathered in front of the school gate and barricaded the Owo-Ikare Akoko expressway as they chanted solidarity songs.
They called on relevant authorities to find solutions to the accidents that had left many dead and others maimed.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olugba Ige, calmed the students down and assured them that something would be done about the issue.
He promised that immediate measures would be taken to arrest the ugly development as the institution await the dualisation of the road by the state government.
