The woman accused of seizing an employee’s baby and starving him to death, Mrs Tina Ugbonaya, has come out to share her own side of the story.
In an interview with Punch, Mrs. Ogbonnaya said Gift gave birth to her child in June this year. She said the child was born healthy but lacked maternal care from Gift.
She alleged that Gift abandoned her baby one month after giving birth and travelled to the village claiming that her uncle enrolled her for WAEC examination and she needed to go and sit for the exam.
Mrs. Ogbonnaya alleged that after she gave birth, Gift had refused to give the child food and denied the child breast milk.
She alleged that Gift fled her home because she and her husband insisted she must take care of her child. She claimed she took the baby boy to a nurse to take care of as he had emaciated due to Gift’s negligence. Mrs. Ogbonnaya claimed to have paid the nurse N30, 000 to take care of the baby. She vehemently denied holding the child captive.
Her husband who also spoke, corroborated her claims that Gift neglected her child. He told newsmen to go to Kajola Street where they stay to make their independent findings.
According to him, he and his wife had fought the young mother many times and called members of the community over her poor treatment of her child.
On her part, Gift claimed that the husband brought her to Lagos from the village and was taking good care of her. She said she welcomed her baby in June and that by August she decided to travel home and that when she returned the couple allegedly started maltreating her.
She claimed the wife sent her to go and buy bread and egg around 2 am and she could not find any shop open and when she returned, the husband accused her of going to meet a boyfriend and said she could no longer stay in the house.
She said the man disallowed her from entering the house and the next day she called to know when she could come for her child. She claimed the husband told her she would have to pay her back the money they spent on her before she could come for her child.
She said when she asked how much, he said N200,000. She said when the wife called her later, she claimed the amount was N5 million.
She said Mrs Ogbonnaya held on to her baby for a month until he died.
