The Indonesian government has formally apologised to the Federal Government of Nigeria over the torture of a Nigerian diplomat in the South-East Asia country on August 8.

Nigerians were shocked last weekend by a viral video clip showing two Indonesian Immigration officers torturing a man later identified as an accredited Nigerian diplomat, Mohammed Buba.

The clip showed two Indonesian officials holding the man down, while the third official pressed the side of the face of the diplomat against the back rest of the bus seat with all his might causing the Nigerian to cry in intense pain, shouting he could not breathe.

The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, condemned the treatement meted out to the diplomat and demanded an unreserved apology from the Indonesian government.

He threatened that Nigeria would review its relationship with the country, even as the the Federal government also announced the recall of the Nigerian Ambassador to Indonesia for consultation.

The spokesperson of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, has now formally apologized.

Teuku said: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the incident on August 7th. This is an isolated incident, and is in no way related to the commitment of the Indonesian government in carrying out its obligations as host country or in accordance with the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.”
