Lives lost, police station attacked

Anambra CP, Bala Kuryas

Yet an uncertain number of lives were lost in various parts of the South-East on Monday as some gunmen believed to be enforcing the sit-at-home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) shot travelers and burnt some vehicles.

Some of the gunmen in seven vehicles also stormed the new Nnewi Police Area Command engaging in a protracted shoot-out with the police before reportedly carting away arms and ammunition.

Some Nigerians on Twitter alleged that the majority of the police at the station had gone out to hunt for people enforcing the sit-at-home order when the gunmen stormed their station and wreaked havoc.

The policemen remaining at the station reportedly tried to repel the attack for about an hour before giving up and taking to their heels.

Daily Trust reported that a reinforcement later arrived from the Navy but the attackers had left.

Reports indicated that at least four policemen and four civilians lost their lives in Anambra and Imo states. Two persons believed to be enforcing the sit-at-home order were also reportedly shot dead.

Punch reported that three Hummer buses belonging to Libra and Okey Transport companies, a Sienna, and a Highlander SUV were set ablaze along the Owerri-Umuahia Road, which was later deserted by motorists.

Two travelers were believed to have been burnt with one of the buses they were traveling in, while others were able to scamper to safety, with injuries, including bullet-inflicted injuries.
