A man has told his divorce-seeking wife to pay him back N200, 000 for the dowry of N20,000 he paid in 2011.

The man, Abdullahi Mustafa, told his wife of ten years, Asma’u Muhammad, that the increment was due to the depreciation of the Naira since he paid the dowry in 2011.

Mustafa made the demand during the hearing of their divorce case at a Shari’a court sitting on Wednesday, August 4 in Magajin Gari, Kaduna.

The Sharia allows a divorce through the return of the dowry the man paid when marrying the woman. The process is known as Khul’i.

Mustafa, 40, told the court that he would not accept the N20,000 dowry he gave Asma’u in 2011 because the money today after taking into consideration the depreciation of the Naira should not be less than N200,000.

He further argued that N20,000 would not be enough to marry another wife today.

“Time has changed and the value of Naira has depreciated. Marriages are costly, as such, I can’t accept the old dowry”, he said.

The judge, Murtala Nasir adjourned has adjourned till Monday, August 9.
