Tanker explosion consumes lives, vehicles on Lagos-Ibadan Exp.

A fuel-bearing tanker has exploded in flames on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around Ogere, destroying many vehicles including private cars.

Number of casualties is not yet known, but an en eye-witness said she saw three bodies burnt in private cars.

It was learnt that a trailer had earlier had an accident as early as 4am on Tuesday morning.

The accident created massive traffic hold up on either side of the road. A fuel-laden tanker caught up in the gridlock was said to have suddenly erupted in flames, which quickly spread to other vehicles trapped in the traffic snarl.

.TRACE Corps Public Relations Officer, Cdr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, in a preliminary release said the fire outbreak happened along the proposed new Kara Market inbound Ibadan.

He said seven trucks and two cars were affected, but was silent on casualty figure. He said rescue operations was still ongoing with the combined efforts of TRACE, FRSC, POLICE NSCDC and the FIRE SERVICE.

He advised motorists to ply the alternative routes as follows:

“Vehicles moving inbound Lagos should go through Saapade-Ode/Remo-Iperu-Sagamu to relink Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“In addition, vehicles moving inbound Ibadan should also go through Sagamu-Iperu-Ode/Remo-Saapade to relink Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

“While any inconvenience is highly regretted, drivers are implored to please maintain lane disciple, so as not worsen the traffic situation” he said.
