Tragedy struck in Awka, Anambra State on Friday as a lorry carrying cows killed eight children hawking at Kwata flyover junction in Awka, Anambra State.
The development irked local residents who descended on the lorry, setting it ablaze with the cows inside it.
The lorry carrying the cattle to an unknown location reportedly lost its brakes while descending the Kwata junction slope, knocked down eight hawkers and rammed into two SUV cars, injuring their occupants.
The incident happened about 2pm and attracted the youths in the vicinity, who mobilised themselves to burn down the truck without allowing any of the cows to be saved.
It was not clear if the driver and his conductor escaped unhurt.
Attempts by the fire service to put out the fire was resisted by the mob, who also prevented the burnt truck from being towed away from the road.
The assistance of military men was sought to disperse irate youths.
The military men reportedly shot in the air sporadically forcing some motorists to abandon their vehicles and flee for dear life.
