One feared dead in Police clash with motorcyclists in Lagos

A man is feared dead in a clash between commercial motorcyclists and policemen at Ile- Epo, Oke Odo, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State.

Trouble reportedly erupted this morning when a brief confrontation between a group of okada riders, mainly of Northern extraction, led to the shooting to death of one of them by the police.

Eye witnesses said the motorcyclists regrouped in large numbers forcing the detachment of police to withdraw quickly.

The aggrieved okada operators were said to have proceeded to vent their spleen on passersby and public properties. Some people who walked into the fracas were reportedly injured.

An eye-witness claimed the okada operators mobilised themselves to burn down a nearby police station but were repelled by the police.

Police reinforcement stopped the crisis from escalating any further. Police patrol vehicles were seen moving round the area at the time of filing this report.

Chief Press Secretary to the Lagos State Governor, Gboyega Akosile, confirmed normalcy had returned to the area.
He tweeted: “A detachment of policemen has been deployed to Ile Epo Area of the state to restore normalcy and maintain peace. The Commissioner of @PoliceNG, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered thorough investigation into the incident that was reported in the morning.
