Motorists and other road users along the Ikot Ekpene Road in Aba town, Abia State, scampered for safety on Friday when the police and army personnel engaged one another in a brawl.
The fight was said to have started when policemen from the nearby Eziama Divisional Police station, on a road check at Onyeador Close/Ikot Ekpene Road/East Street, allegedly slapped a soldier during an argument.
The reason for the argument was not clear. The assaulted soldier, who was not in uniform at the time, went to the barracks to enlist the support of his colleagues who stormed the check points and attacked the policemen.
They descended on every policeman in sight, including those checking motorists’ particulars without minding how the public perceived their action.
Passersby fled the area to avoid being victims of accidental discharge from the guns of either party.
