Two siblings are currently in police custody in Imo State in connection with the murder of their brother during a physical combat over their father’s property in Okuku West Local Government of Imo State.
Imo Police Command spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu said Chinonso Emenyionu, a father of two, was hit with a heavy wood and slumped during a meeting called to settle a rift within the family over how to share the wealth left behind by the patriarch of the family.
The meeting had reportedly been summoned by the siblings’ maternal relations from Agwa in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State in accordance with tradition to share the inheritance of their late father, Emenyionu.
Chinonso was reported to have insisted that the properties be shared equally, while the three other brothers, Chioma and their mother connived to share them without his consent.
As the meeting progressed, hot words were reportedly exchanged and Chinonso, whose wife is pregnant, was locked in a physical combat with his immediate younger brother, Chibuzor.
Their younger brothers, who are twins, Mishark and Shedrack allegedly hit Chinonso with a big stick on the back of his head and he lost consciousness.
Chinonso never recovered from the blow and was confirmed dead at the hospital they rushed him to.
The brothers reportedly fled the house the moment they realised Chinonso was dead. Police however later picked up one of the twins who hit Chinonso with a stick and is currently being detained.
Chioma was also arrested by the police, as she was said to have beaten up the pregnant wife of the deceased while the altercation lasted.
Imo Police Command spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed that Chioma and one of the twins had been arrested.
Shedding more light on the incident, Ikeokwu said the information at the police’s disposal was that the deceased picked up a knife and threatened to kill his mother.
This, he said, prompted Chioma to call her two other brothers who engaged the deceased in a fight during which he was hit on back of the head with a piece of wood.
“He lost consciousness and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was pronounced dead,” he said.
